Zondag is het 4 mei en herdenken Nederlanders de slachtoffers van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Toch gaan er meer stemmen op voor een bredere herdenking, maar daar moet Frits Barend niets van weten (zie video).
De jaarlijkse discussie rond wie we op 4 mei precies herdenken, laait ook dit jaar weer op. Naast de officiële Nationale Dodenherdenking op de Dam vindt er in Den Haag een alternatieve plechtigheid plaats: 4 mei inclusief. Het initiatief wil niet alleen slachtoffers uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog herdenken, maar ook die van meer recente conflicten, zoals in Gaza.

De uitbreiding van de herdenking roept heftige reacties op. Journalist Frits Barend is woedend over het initiatief. “Dit is puur antisemitisme,” stelt hij. “Deze mensen hoor je nooit, behalve als het over Israël gaat. Ze grijpen alles aan om tegen Joden te zijn”, vertelt hij in Nieuws van de Dag.
Frits vindt het schandalig dat dit überhaupt ter sprake komt. “Die 105.000 Joden die vermoord zijn in Nederland, daar gaat het over én de mensen die zich hiertegen hebben verzet”, aldus de sportjournalist. Volgens hem is het een “pure provocatie”.
Barend’s emotional reaction has sparked further debate in Dutch society. While many agree with his stance and emphasize the importance of preserving the historical focus of the commemoration, others argue that remembrance should not be limited by time or geography. They believe the pain caused by modern-day conflicts deserves equal attention.
The organizers of “4 mei inclusief” stress that their intention is not to undermine the memory of Holocaust victims or those who resisted the Nazis. Instead, they want to open up the conversation around war, violence, and oppression in all forms. “We are not taking anything away,” one spokesperson explained. “We are simply expanding the space for remembrance to include those who suffer today.”
This clash of perspectives is not new. Every year, discussions arise around who should be remembered on May 4th. Some believe that the day should evolve alongside society’s values, while others feel that doing so risks diminishing the unique tragedy of World War II.
Meanwhile, the official National Remembrance ceremony at the Dam in Amsterdam remains unchanged. The King and Queen will attend, and at 8:00 PM the country will fall silent for two minutes. For many, it is a deeply personal moment of reflection. But this year, more than ever, that silence may echo with unresolved questions about the meaning of remembrance in a changing world.
