‘Dancing with the Stars’ premiere recap: How UW-Madison ‘Bachelorette’ Jenn Tran, Olympian Ilona Maher and con artist Anna Delvey did

Dancing it out to one of the most empowering breakup anthems ever after a whirlwind romance and hellish breakup.

While that’s usually reserved for the confines of your home or a bar, “The Bachelorette” Jenn Tran did it on the season premiere of “Dancing with the Stars” Tuesday night.

For Night 1, the competitors got to pick their own personal anthems to dance to. Tran, a University of Wisconsin-Madison alum, chose Miley Cyrus’ Grammy-winning, career-defining hit “Flowers.” Tran called it the perfect song for this moment she’s in.

“My time on ‘The Bachelorette’ didn’t end the way that I had hoped,” Tran said on “DWTS.” “I truthfully felt like my heart was getting ripped out of my chest. But, as one door closes, another one opens.”

Immediately after “The Bachelorette” season finale and “After the Final Rose,” which aired earlier this month, Tran hopped on a plane at LAX — where she met dance partner Sasha Farber — and flew overnight to be on “Good Morning America” for the announcement of this season’s “DWTS” celebrities and their pros.

Tran, who said she took one ballroom dance class in college, said “DWTS” came at “the most perfect time” in her life. But, just coming off of another TV show, Tran had the shortest amount of time to train among this season’s stars, host Alfonso Ribeiro noted.

“I want to be able to pour everything into this and feel like I really left it all out there,” Tran said on the show. “It’s going to be empowering.”

Tran — in a super-short glitzy red and orange number — and Farber — in a matching orange button-down — performed a Cha Cha.

“Forget about ‘The Bachelorette’ because you’ve found your perfect match right here with Sasha,” judge Derek Hough said. “You all are, like, adorable. I love it.”

While they had a “really great first dance” and have “so much potential,” Derek said, Tran needs to work on straightening her legs a bit, extending her arms and not getting ahead of the music.

“My love, you’re really blossoming in front of us,” judge Bruno Tonioli told Tran.

He said the dance had all the qualities of the Cha Cha: Bright, lively and happy. While Tonioli loved the performance and noted Tran’s natural sense of music, he said she needs to work on foot placement.

“As a performance, that was so entertaining,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. “I loved every minute of it. What I liked is that you have all these qualities — like, you’re snatched and then you’re like raw. I liked that. That’s going to work really well as we move forward through this competition.”

Coming off of several life-changing weeks, host Julianne Hough asked Tran how she was feeling after the dance.

“I’m just feeling so, so grateful to be here, and to have honestly the best partner ever. He’s been lifting me up in every corner that he can,” Tran said. “It’s best truly amazing to have such a best friend already.”

Also in Tran’s corner — and in the audience: Jonathon Johnson, the third-place finisher from her “Bachelorette” season.

Tran and Farber received a score of 19 out of 30, with a seven from Inaba, a six from Derek Hough and a six from Tonioli. That landed them in the middle of the pack.

“On such a high from last night!!!!!” Tran posted on Instagram Wednesday. “Never having danced before and debuting to a song that is so empowering and inspiring to my life right now is a dream come true. This chapter’s gonna be a good one 🤞🏻Thank you for all the incredible support and encouragement I hope to continue to make you guys proud ❤️”
